Corvair Atlanta's Springfest '99
Here's an interior view of my ride for the weekend, da Chuckster's Madeira Maroon '65 Monza. The car's odometer just turned over 3,000 original miles during the Springfest weekend, with Chuck behind the wheel during the rally event on Friday. We had a blast on the 30 mile rally course. Participants were given a series of photographs of landmarks along the route and told they WOULDN'T find a couple of the landmarks seen in the pictures, because they "weren't there." So, as we examined the pictures and searched for the landmarks, we couldn't be sure we'd find 'em. It was a fun twist! A couple of jokers in the deck, so to speak. Additionally, the landmarks had to be found in correct sequence, and once you spotted one, you had to check the back of the related picture for a question, which you'd answer on a separate piece of paper. They wouldn't give us a clipboard either, and in the open car, the wind blew everything around enough to keep my arms flailing through the whole trip. It was a little like juggling 25 balls, and amazingly, I managed not to lose it and whack da Chuckster "upside da head." We were still friends at the finish line. |
Stephen L. Brown of Hartwell, Georgia, rolled into Springfest in this 95 HP, 1966 Corvair 500. The 500 sport coupe was a strong seller in '66, outdoing its 4-door sedan sibling by the factor of 3 to 1. |
This Canadian built Aztec Bronze '66 Monza sport coupe, owned by Jim and Marjie Tucker of Hayesville, North Carolina, was the subject of a feature a few months ago (see Extra! section). It was good to see the heavily optioned 140 4-speed car "in the flesh" and confirm that it is as beautiful as its pictures. |
