Corvair Atlanta's Springfest '99
Current owner of the '60, Larry Murphy, pointed out the car was at one time owned by Clark's Corvair Parts of Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. It was purchased to authenticate and reproduce Corvair parts. It is exactly the way it left the General Motors factory in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and is believed to be one of the best remaining low mileage original 1960 models. Let's take a look at some of the features and original accessories we got to examine at Springfest, including the high quality, chrome plated side view mirror at right. |

Those not opting for the optional bright trim gas door guard were destined to end up with chips in the paint surrounding the fuel door. Most gas stations of the day provided full service, and the attendants were not necessarily as careful as they should be. The 1960 door guard formed a full circle, while the optional trim piece was in later years converted to a half circle, protecting only the lower half. Gasoline wasn't that expensive by today's standards, but salaries weren't what they are today either. A chrome plated locking gas cap helped thwart late night siphon jockeys or malicious pranksters armed with cups of sugar. It's a minor detail, but the design of the filler tube and the overflow system was also unique on the 1960 model. |

Wide whitewall, bias ply tires were offered only in 1960. The louvered full wheel covers were also 1960 model year exclusive. Mechanically and cosmetically, this car is in outstanding original condition. The engine and body have been highly detailed, with no expense spared. The entire drive train was professionally resealed. Any replacement parts used were strictly General Motors N.O.S. |

The entire interior is factory original. The exterior was repainted in enamel with hardener, wet sanded and highly polished. All serial numbers and date codes match, including windshield and all glass. How's this for the full treatment? Larry points out that this is the original ignition key. It's remarkable that it's survived the decades without being lost. The key code insert hasn't even been punched! 1960 owners, referred to affectionately by Virtual 'Vairs members as "cave men," just HAVE to be drooling over this car. |

A look into the trunk reveals a gas heater in the upper left hand corner of the body colored compartment interior. In the center, the trunk-mounted spare. In the lower center of the picture, we see the Motor Trend magazine Car of the Year award earned by the Corvair in 1960. I was a little surprised to discover the car was for sale. The asking price was $10,500. Larry's Monza carries 1960 VIN #927W261765. |
