The sky over the Fall Classic was now heavily overcast with rain falling steadily as we photographed the modified late model seen below. The black on black wheel/tire combination leaves only the front hub visible in the poor light. |
The car is modified with some Fitch Sprint equipment including the buttressed 'ventop' roof add-on and the Sprint by Fitch emblem. Later in the day, we were treated to a full out performance as this car took to the highway for a full throttle pass through the gears. It was good to hear a well-tuned Corvair winding out again! |
The late model engine compartment pictured above drew a crowd. An Oldsmobile Toronado engine and transaxle assembly replaces the Corvair's pancake six. Can you say "tons o' torque?" |
Have a look at this '64 Monza Spyder with genuine Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels; an expensive but highly desirable option on the early Corvair! Today, the jaw-dropping spokes are rare and tend to cause heavy drooling in the ranks of early model aficionados. While the Spyder's owner, Paul Steinberg, wasn't nearby when we shot the picture, we did meet his wife, Sandy. She seemed rightfully proud of the turbo-charged classic! |
