2001: A Corvair Odyssey

A production SS?

Chevy fans all know SS stands for Super Sport, and most know Chevrolet never built a production Corvair SS—there was a design study, yes—but never a production car. Undaunted by what might seem like a missed opportunity at Chevrolet, Bill Bertram of Rogers, Minnesota, decided to build his own. Basing his build on the proven Crown Manufacturing mid-engine conversion kit popular in the early '70s, Bill tossed the back seat and mounted a 4.3 liter V-6 amidships and cooled it with a rear mounted radiator and two thermostatically controlled fans.

Air/fuel management is provided by an appropriately sized Holley 390 4-barrel, mounted on an Edelbrock manifold. The SS is fitted with a 4-speed transaxle with 3.27:1 final drive ratio and 4-wheel disc brakes.

Bold, Z-28 inspired stripes, Camaro wheels and front and rear spoilers make a great looking combination.

Bill's modifications resulted in more than good looks. The custom-built SS is a well balanced, responsive and reliable performer. Chevrolet might have done it just this way. Nice job, Bill!
