2001: A Corvair Odyssey
Organizing an annual convention is a daunting task requiring the involvement of the full executive of the Corvair Society of America, and the volunteer efforts of many of its members. After months of planning and hard work, it must be gratifying for the organizers to witness the smiles of the convention attendees as the enjoy the various events. At right, newly-elected CORSA Vice President, Sarah Jones, shares a hug with member in good standing, Chuck Armer, of Chamblee, Georgia, while he displays his well engineered valve cover racer for the camera. |
Valve cover racing? Valve cover racing is a mixture of soap box racing and drag racing, in miniature. Gravity propels pairs of custom built racers down a 2-lane ramp, with the winner of each round advancing to the next until an overall winner is determined. The 2001 CORSA International Convention Valve Cover Race winner was Keith Schmuhl of Plano, Texas. |
The bright white Yenko Stinger with all-black trim pictured below belongs to James Rice of Pekin, Illinois. James is one of four CORSA Central Division Directors, and an ardent autocross racer. |
After the race prepared Stinger with the stout 6-point roll cage "appeared" in his driveway in 1999, James tamed it somewhat by adding bumpers, wipers, mufflers and a speedometer. This allowed him to license it and drive it to and from his local autocross track. He also added a passenger seat, cleaned the car up, and blew on some fresh paint just in time for the Chicago convention. |
