John Gray's '64 club coupe

Presto! We cut to the chase and see the results of the John's work. This is what the car looked like when John and his wife, Bonnie, attended the Williamsburg event.

John's slalom machine was modified to lower the car's center of gravity. Details of the suspension mods are set out later in this feature. Quick steering arms yield a 15:1 steering ratio, and a small diameter Corvette steering wheel makes a further improvement to steering response.

Helping keep the Monza low to the ground are 13 x 5.5" Cragar SS wheels and B.F. Goodrich Comp 185/60R1 soft compound tires designed for slalom applications.

John felt the stock front bumper didn't look right on the lowered car, so he replaced it with extremely rare, 60s vintage J.C. Whitney units and added a license plate frame he found at a swap meet. He believes it's a GM accessory frame intended for late models.

Power is provided by a mildly modified late model 140 engine, with forged aluminum .030 oversize pistons, and an OTTO Parts 260 camshaft.

The stock 4-carburetor setup was revised to prevent turn cut out. The primaries were massaged to "Proflow" specifications by Bob Coffin at The Shop in Mesa, Arizona. Larger  venturi  secondaries complete the setup.

The transmission is a stock '64 Corvair manual 4-speed.

The dual exhaust system is a copy of the Fitch system sold in the 60s, and currently marketed by Clark's Corvair Parts in Shelburne Falls, MA.
