John Gray's '64 club coupe

As mentioned earlier, John is a member of CORSA Ontario, Canada's original CORSA chapter. The club celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 1998.

In the photographs on this page, we see John on his way to winning his class at the 1996 CORSA Ontario Trillium event slalom. At the time of his win, John was using 3.27:1 final drive ratio. That's since been changed to 3.55:1.

Suspension modifications include the use of a late model front sway bar. Springs are 1960-63, 5/8" diameter, heavy duty coils. One coil was cut from each of all four springs, with a little extra cut from the right rear to bring ride height into line. On the '64 models, GM originally used different coils on each side at the rear. If the difference is not maintained, the left side sags.

A white vinyl Clark's reproduction interior was installed, with a Corbeau racing seat replacing the stock unit of the driver's side. A photo wasn't available when this feature was written.

Future plans include the addition of auxiliary gauges, and the possible inclusion of stock rocker panel trim. Reproduction trim was not available at the time of restoration.

John intends to take the car to a few Corvair events in the United States over the summer. He'll also run the CORSA Ontario slalom series and attend the Yenko Reunion in September.

As far as competition is concerned, he'd like to win IS3 Class at a National Convention, and says he won't repeat the "mistake" he made in 1997, when he let someone else drive his car in competition in Chicago. The other driver won the class, and John had to settle for second place. From an observer's point of view, I'd call that a one-two combination! Not bad!

As another early model fan put it, "John Gray's Monza is a Corvair with a lot of character." The car's dark blue metallic paint, all-around tinted glass, distinctive front end treatment and tastefully lowered stance   combine to proclaim, "This ain't your granddaddy's Corvair."
