D.A.C.C. Corvair Homecoming

As noon hour approached, I started looking for John Allesee, the editor of the club's home page, who had sent me, by e-mail, directions to the event.

I asked the fellow in the picture, Bob Norwalk, where I could find him. Bob was not sure where John was, but spent some time with me, telling me about his Corvair.

This wasn't the first visit to the Corvair Homecoming for Bob, a member of the Friends of Corvair Club, in Canton, Ohio. Bob gets around. He picked up the hardware he's holding, at Corvair Showcase '98, the national Corvair convention I couldn't get to. The trophy is a Peoples' Choice Award. When you consider there were 1200 registered Corvair people in St. Louis for the conference, that award really means something!

Bob had the award nicely positioned in his open trunk, before I came along and asked if he could close the lids so I could get some good pictures. Not a problem!

Before closing the engine compartment lid, Bob showed me the air-conditioning unit, which in 1965, was mounted directly over the engine, necessitating the use of different air-cleaner housings. They appear to be identical to the air-cleaners used on most early models.

The setup differs from the later (1966-69) air conditioning, which placed the condenser in front of the engine instead of over it, facilitating the use of standard air cleaner housings.

I went a little shutter-crazy on this car, and got a couple of other good shots (featured on the next page).
