Racers' Reunion at Blackhawk
Burt Hultman, one of the corner workers for the event, took several shots with a digital camera. While they load, let me relay some comments from Chuck Armer, owner of Darth Vair (featured in the Extra! section of this site). He clocked 1,730 miles on the round trip to Blackhawk from Chamblee, GA. "After seeing no Corvairs on the trip to the track," Chuck told me, "it was a pleasure to see them at the hotel and then the track, where the view was spectacular! They were parked where no one could miss them, at the entrance to the track. There were Corvair racers and drivers of every description, cars being driven in or flat towed, cars in machine shop trailers with golf carts and ATV tow vehicles. We were certainly an electric group. There were long distance Corvair personalities flying in to borrow rides and there were some driving non-Corvairs. There were some excellent Reunion shirts available with Dan Gianotti's #3 car on the front. It was a great get-together and I hope everybody had as much fun as I did." I'd heard Chuck had spun out on one of his runs and asked him about it. "Blackhawk was a pretty slick track in the on-again, off-again, rain," he said. "Rain tires didn't help much, as I was able to demonstrate in Turn 2, spinning 180 degrees and sliding out onto the grass and mud. Darth stalled, but when I turned him over and blew some of the mud off the tires, we were back in business. Turn 2 caught several of us, but there was no real damage. I expected the only pictures we'd see would be the ones from Turn 2! Besides the drivers, VV was represented by corner workers; Burt Hultman and Rich Roberts. Jim Rice was official photographer and historian. The organizers were friendly and the instructors were excellent. It was great!" |
