Racers' Reunion at Blackhawk
According to Joe Robbins, the sound of high performance Corvairs is thrilling, particularly the Stingers with headers. He described the sound of Warren LeVeque's turbocharged Stinger (below) as "whining so much that dogs in 3 counties started to howl," adding, "then there was Jon Brakke's GT-3 full race car with a sound you think can't possibly come from a Corvair... but does." |
Warren LeVeque's Stinger
Event organizer Warren LeVeque's car is a 300 hp screamer. There are other photos and a description of this Stinger in the Yenko section of this site. You'll also see Gianotti's 'vair there, and some good shots of Robert Lander's other Corvair. Yes, he has a Fitch AND a Stinger! |
Al Huston's Stinger
Joe Robbins gets the "picture of the day" award for this shot of Al Huston's Stinger, YS-303. It's a '65 Corsa coupe with quick steering arms, convertible coil springs, balanced engine, .030 over Badger pistons, Clark's solid steel flywheel, Isky 280 cam, Corvair Underground 2 1/2" headers, Walker turbo mufflers and Toyota GTS seats. |
A good part of the fun at Blackhawk was provided by Corvair guru Larry Claypool and his wife, Marybeth. The pair showed up in this Fiat 850, ran the course and even provided tow services for a couple of disabled Corvairs! Larry and Marybeth also enjoy racing their "Lead-tailed lump," a '66 Monza sport coupe powered by a 425. cu. in. Olds engine, and featured in the Extra! section of this site. |
