Corvairs at Blackhawk 2001

Here's a close look at Al Huston's 1965 Yenko Stinger YS#303, which we saw entering the Blackhawk infield on the previous page. While the car predates the first run of Stingers, which were based on the 1966 Corvair Corsa, it is one of the numbered cars later certified by Yenko Sportscars, Inc. It features competition prepared cylinder heads topped by Zenith triple-barrel carburetors. A stock air cleaner housing is modified to draw from the fresh air plenum behind the rear window instead of through stock rear-facing snorkels.

Al, pictured below with his Yenko, was one of the Corvair racers who took advantage of complimentary overnight camping at the track the night before the race. He spent a few minutes in friendly conversation with us before posing for the picture, after which we wished him luck and headed for the pit area.
