Corvairs at Blackhawk 2001
The next car to catch our attention was Rob Fike's '66 Corvair GT-3 racer, a great example of a no-holds-barred competition car. Rob races with the Midwestern Council of Sports Car Clubs (MCSCC). He completed his first full season in 2000, when he satisfied the requirements to get his full comp license. |
A corporate pilot of 20 years, Rob was never able to go racing because of family obligations while his children were growing up, but when his youngest turned 19, he decided he was ready to have some high-speed fun on the ground. He and his wife live in Speedway, Indiana, just three blocks from Indianapolis Motor Speedway. At right, we see Rob's low flying cockpit with its full roll cage, quick change fuse block (center dash), switch block and other go-fast goodies. |
With the rear of the car up on jack stands and the beefy Hoosier slicks removed, we catch a glimpse of the tricked out racer's modified suspension components and exhaust headers. Note the safety straps on the rear backlite and the weight saving removal of the rear bumper, fresh air grill, backup light assemblies and rear deck lid hinges, which were replaced by quick-release pins. The same treatment has been given the front clip, as seen in the picture below. |
