Ken Arnold's '63 Rampside |
We jump ahead a couple of years and find that Ken's once run-of-the-mill Corvair 95 Rampside is developing a personality all its own. Aside from the primer paint and the multi-colored paint scheme, there's something interesting going on amidships. |
Yes, that's a small block Chevy engine buddied up to a radiator behind the cab. It isn't obvious at first that there is a source of cooling air, made possible by the removal of the stock gas tank and Ken's inventiveness. We'll take a closer look a little later. Ken was doing some body work and experimenting with color at this stage of the build. |
At right is an early photo of the engine, transmission and cooling system. A 3-core radiator is backed up by an electric fan. The source of the rad's cooling air will be shown a little later on. I promise! A fabricated cross member and engine mount bolts to the truck's frame rails and supports the engine at its stock motor mount locations. The Turbo-Hydramatic 350 transmission was scavenged from a 1972 Chevy pickup truck. |
At the delivery end of the set-up, we find a 1984 Corvette independent rear suspension (IRS) with 3.07:1 gears. The transverse left spring and sway bar can be seen under the housing. An under-vehicle view comes later. The battery box and a gas tank from a Chevy S-10 pickup are located behind the IRS. That's an electric Carter fuel pump in the lower left hand corner of the photograph. |
