Ken Arnold's '63 Rampside |
The Rampside is wearing new B.F. Goodrich T/A radial tires. Fronts are 215/50x16 mounted on Camaro alloy wheels narrowed to 6 and 3/4 inches from the stock 8 inch width. The full 8" wheel width is used at the back to accommodate 245/50x16 rubber. Ken opted for disc brakes all around. Fronts are '70s era Chevelle, while the rears are stock Corvette. The front suspension is stock Corvair with a twist. The coil springs were cut to lower the ride height. Front and rear track is identical to the '84 Corvette. Wheelbase is 95 1/2 inches, a half inch longer than a stock Rampside. |
At right, we see where the stock transmission mount has been removed to make room for a new, higher mount, with gussets added for shock attachment. The TH-350 transmission is fitted with a shift kit and is cable controlled using a 1978 style Corvette shifter. A Corvette TH-700 tail section is used behind the TH-350. There is no driveshaft. The center section of the Corvette IRS is rigidly mounted. As is the Corvette, there is no movement of the differential when the suspension travels. This also reduces un-sprung weight. |
The bed area behind the engine was made using two engine lids flanked by built up areas over the stock wheel wells. The bed floor is screwed in place, facilitating easy access to the battery, electric fuel pump and tank. There is another access panel below the tail gate. Polished aluminum diamond plate panels surround the engine and line the inside of the ramp. The vertical pipe to the right of the engine is a coolant recovery tank. |
