Daytona 2000 - Corvair Speedweek

Dick chose to equip the '65 with the stronger 1966 Saginaw transaxle and built the 140 engine using 1966 cylinder heads with mounting bosses for the '66 air-conditioning compressor bracket.

The 1966 air-conditioning setup places the condenser in front of the engine instead of over it, as was the case in '65. This arrangement allows the use of a standard 140 air-cleaner on the four carburetor engine, and greatly improves access to engine components. You can compare the set-up to an original-style '65 configuration by clicking here to open a new window.

This view shows the Argent Silver cove area that was unique to the Corsa series, the correct 3-piece air exhaust grill used on the Corsa, the rear deck antenna, the 140 emblem on the deck lid, as well as the Corsa emblems on the front fender and rear quarter-panel, and the correct positioning of the optional bumper guards. Also of note are the chrome plated exhaust extensions that so many owners used to use in the '60s. The car is also equipped with all-around tinted glass.

The Shanks' hard work and dedication to the Corvair hobby has earned their beautiful red convertible three consecutive wins in the Peoples Choice Late Open class. It's easy to see why!
