Daytona 2000 - Corvair Speedweek
'C' for Corvair-powered At right, Arizona's Tom Schrum cruises into a staging area in the infield at Daytona, before running the autocross in his Devin 'C'. The handmade fiberglass car is known for its blistering, sub-four-second 0-60 mph acceleration using a Corvair engine and power train. No doubt, the Devin provides an exhilarating ride! |

The drawing at right was on display at the Concours event, and shows the lightweight frame designed by Bill Devin and constructed of 2 x 4" box and 3" tubular thin wall steel. The Devin 'C' had an 82-inch wheelbase and a total weight of only 1500 lbs. An awesome slalom racer, the 'C' frequently turned in Fastest Times of the Day (F.T.D.) in competition with Corvettes, Porsches, Lotus', MGBs and Healeys. |

Wanna help with tech inspection at the Speedway? One of the highlights of the convention was attending the Virtual Vairs group meeting. It was great to meet fellow members of the e-mail discussion group and put faces to the names that have been cascading into my mail box. I was also pleased when Virtual Vairs Webmaster, Bryan Blackwell, invited me to help with tech inspection at the Autocross the following morning. "Be there at 7:00 a.m.," he told me with a grin, and thanks to some arrangements hastily made by CORSA's Kent Sullivan, I was able to hitch a ride to the track with Harold Dexter and his wife, Kitty, in their '68 Monza convertible. This novice inspector was on time, got a crash course in tech inspection techniques, and spent the next couple of hours trying not to drool on the race cars. I had a great time as did the more experienced members of the tech team; Bryan, Fred Bybee, Stan East, Dave Eslinger, Paul Fox, Ken Klingaman and the others who pitched in.
