2001: A Corvair Odyssey
Harlan Colburn of Littleton, Colorado, ran in Specialty Class. His 600-plus hp 1967 Corvair is seen below. It was great to see him share the supercharged 383 cu. in. Chevy powered roadster with SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) racer Seth Emerson. Seth cooked up a best pass at 29.19 seconds, and Harlan ran a best-of-the-day 28.94! These guys know how to build radical Corvairs and how to throw them around! |
The sequence of photos at right (viewed from right to left) shows the mid-engine racer entering a short radius, high speed turn. Note how the suspension hunkers down and how there is very little body lean. |
V-8 Registry Harlan is an active member of the V-8 Registry. His car appears in an article on the V-8 Registry in the Extra! section of this site. Click here for immediate access to more information on the group. |
Corvairs were still blazing around the autocross track as the time came for us to begin our trip back to Canada. As we headed toward Detroit, we remarked that like its namesake the movie, 2001: A Corvair Odyssey had a surreal (and highly entertaining) quality. Thanks to the efforts of the members of the host club, Chicagoland Corvair Enthusiasts, the executive and members of CORSA and all who attended, the international convention lived up to our high expectations. The Corvair Society of America lives on with thousands of members sharing diverse Corvair interests. Some are most dedicated to the preservation of the Corvair and its history. Others are more focused on the fun of owning, working on, showing, racing, or driving the Corvair day-to-day. All are friends of the Corvair. © 2001, 2002 www.corvaircorsa.com |
