2001: A Corvair Odyssey

1966-69 Monza emblem

Late model fans couldn't help but notice Dave Beddome's 1968 Monza sport coupe. The car's eye-catching appeal comes from the combination of its color, Deep Amethyst Purple—a Chrysler color—and a bold, period-correct racing stripe. The car is powered by a 140 hp engine with quad Rochester carburetors topped by a pair of low restriction air-cleaners. A no-nonsense large diameter custom single exhaust system of Dave's own design purges the spent gases. American Racing wheels add a nice touch, too.

Beddome is a member of Western Canada CORSA, one of the two Canadian chapters of the Corvair Society of America. He drove the '68 from his home in Calgary, a distance of almost 2,700 miles. It seemed pointless to ask him if he had a lot of confidence in the car. It's obvious!

I was impressed when Dave later showed up to compete in the autocross, where he put the car through its paces (a best lap of 34.69 seconds) before returning to Calgary. This is a long distance runner!

Every time I get out to photograph Corvairs, I come away with a favorite picture. The straight-on shot below gets the prize this time. This 1968 Monza is in-your-face!

The Concours d'Elegance judges liked the purple Monza too. It scored 90.49 points in the Modified, Late Closed class, capturing a Silver award to accompany Dave on his long drive home to Calgary.
