2001: A Corvair Odyssey

Rupp Monza Jr.

In 1965, Chevrolet purchased its first order of Monza Jr. go-carts from the Rupp company of Ohio. The Monza Jr. combined a scale replica Monza SS body with a Dart Kart chassis, and was used as a Chevrolet give-away at auto shows and exhibits. Eventually it was made available by Rupp to the general public. In 1968, it was renamed the Chevy Jr. and Chevrolet continued to use it as a give-away until 1975.

Rupp Monza Jr. or Chevy Jr.

Anyone who regularly attends  Corvair Society of America events might be under the impression that there are still plenty of 1964 Spyder convertibles around. In fact, they are relatively rare. Only 4,761 were produced in the U.S., and a mere 154 were assembled in Canada, for a total of 4,915 cars.

At right and below is a beautiful example of the breed, owned by Barry Burkman of Spring Valley, Illinois.
