'Vairs on the Horizon - Tahoe '99
Attending an international Corvair convention is a dynamic experience. The 'Vair comes in all shapes and sizes. Consider the three variants on this page. First, the "Honey I shrunk the Corvair!" miniature at right. Now here's one for the Corvair nut with everything. The little early model is an all-metal, single cylinder, gas-powered golf cart. Granted, the little 'vair would be the hit of the links, but might be a little short on power. Next! |
Lance Jordon of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, brought this Ferrari Testarossa-inspired '65 to the party. It's powered by a blown (6-71 GMC) small-block V-8 Chevy mounted amidships in the same location as in a Crown conversion, but mated to an Oldsmobile Toronado trans-axle with a special 30" long adapter. With over 7,000 miles on the build, Lance drove the car to the convention. |

At right, a closer look at the fresh air scoop and louvered rear window area of this "split window" altered 'vair. Anyone familiar with the Fitch Corvair Sprint recognizes the roof add-on, which you can take another look at below. |
|
This '68 Fitch Sprint is owned and was restored by Kevin Willsonn in Juneau, Alaska, where there are only 50 miles of road! The Sprint was barged to Seattle and driven to the convention. Kevin purchased it from the original owner in Connecticut, and has all the papers including the invoice, Fitch documentation, and service records. |

More information on the late model version of the Fitch Sprint is available in the Fitch section of this site. John Fitch sold this version of the Corvair with upgraded power and handling, as well as a few special cosmetic touches like the roof panel and some interior refinements such as the addition of carpet on the fold-down rear seat back. Thanks to Scott Morehead for the photos and to (in alphabetical order) Frank Burkhard, Seth Emerson, Bob Helt, Jerry Jorgensen, Robert Landers, Dennis & Debbie Pleau, Martin Scarr, and Eric Starkey for their assistance in preparing the text for this feature. |
