Rick Norris Crown Corv-8

Daytona 2000

Rick Norris was the Corvair Society of America's first president. In 1970, he attended that organization's first ever national convention in Chicago, and over the years since, he's attended countless Corvair events and maintained his enthusiasm for the car that won his heart and mind back in the '60s. It must have been tremendously gratifying for him to wheel into the 30th annual CORSA convention in Daytona Beach with his newly completed Corv-8 project!

Rick's Corv-8 at rest in Daytona Beach

The theme of the 30th annual convention in Daytona was Corvair Speedweek. The mood of the convention leaned toward performance rather than pure stock, and while there were many exceptional performance prepared Corvairs in attendance, only a handful screamed performance as loudly as Rick's, with its huge, thundering twice pipes bringing up the rear! More than 6 years of dream weaving was about to pay off in precious metal.

Waiting for the judges

I can only imagine what was going through Rick's mind on Thursday, as the Concours judges congregated around the Corv-8. Would they appreciate the modified sport coupe? Would they notice the couple of minor imperfections that had yet to be buffed out? Would the purist factor work against him? There'd be two days and restless nights to think about it before the results were announced at the convention banquet on Saturday night.
