Throttle linkage

This close up shows the fuel injection system's 4-hole "air door" as it is known, and the throttle linkage; a Morse cable in the push configuration with a small Heim style rod end. These fittings are available from Jeg's and others. The throttle body has an internal spring in the lever arm, and a secondary spring helps ensure positive throttle return. The temporary ignition wire labels have since been removed.

The oldest question:
"Where's the engine?"

Shortly after the introduction of the early model Corvair in October of 1959, Corvair owners developed a popular gag. In the presence of a curious onlooker, they'd walk around to the front of the car, key open the trunk and while feigning shock, ask, "Where's the engine?"

In the case of the Corv-8, you can double your fun by popping open the lid at either end of the car and asking the same question!

The old engine compartment is now the trunk

The "new" trunk's floor was finished with sheet aluminum and, after the picture above was taken, was fitted with carpet identical to the interior's. At the upper center of the shot is the transaxle dipstick. The stock air passages that formerly supplied intake and cooling air to the stock engine were closed with sheet aluminum to prevent entry of water. There's lots of room available for a spare tire and overnight bags.

Two steel cross members were added between the sub frame rails to support the trunk floor and provide secure mounting of the mufflers. The rearward member is partially obscured in the photo by the cove. Both were bolted, rather than welded in place.

This arrangement enabled easy removal of the trunk floor for access to components. An original style reproduction transaxle dipstick sticker was located on the bulkhead.
