Rick Norris Crown Corv-8

While Rick was in the planning stages and considering his options for the differential, he got this picture by Bob Anderson of CIDCO in California. It's a shot of Bob's beefed up differential. The unit has a modified posi carrier with 4-spider gears, a heavy duty pinion shaft and wear treated ring and pinion set.

Rick eventually dropped $1200
U.S. to have his 3.27:1 geared
posi unit given the treatment.

Rick commented, "I was working a lot of overtime then."

(For more information on the CIDCO mods, contact Larry's Corvair Parts, in the Links section.)

CIDCO Super Differential

This early shot shows the flat bearing plate in place of a plugged throw out bearing snout. The old pivot ball was ground flat to fill the hole. Rick later removed the starter hole ring and did a lot more grinding to achieve a smooth, clean, look.

The high priced internal parts are protected with 80/90 limited slip gear lube, with friction modifier added.

The transmission was given the ultra close ratio treatment by Bob Coffin of The Shop. Ratios are 2.1:1, 1.5:1, 1.25:1 and 1:00.1.

At the opposite end of this assembly, a Hayes aluminum flywheel and 10.4" Centerforce clutch and pressure plate will transmit power to the transaxle.

Plugged throw out bearing snout

This is one of Rick's own concoctions. It's purely cosmetic, but hey, it's allowed. Hobbies are supposed to be fun!

The finned piece was machined down and attached with epoxy to the 1/4" steel plate that came with the CIDCO modified Corvair differential.

There's nothing cosmetic about the fasteners, however. Rick uses Grade 8 bolts throughout.
