Corvair Atlanta's Springfest '99
On Friday night, Chuck and I had visited the Corvair Atlanta hospitality suite for a couple of cold ones. We met Billy Bruce of the Atlanta area, while he was answering questions about his drag racing experiences in a turbo-charged '63 club coupe that consistently ran 12.40 elapsed times and delivered a best time of 12.39 at 110 MPH! Naturally, this was of great interest, so we jumped in and bombarded him with questions of our own. It seems there was a fair amount of weight reduction involved, including Plexiglas windows and backlight, the removal of the inner trunk frame from the skin, etc. Tech information was right at hand from Billy's racing buddy and engine builder, Lou Pinard of Shreveport, Louisiana. He described how the block and reciprocating assembly was basically stock, and most the the gusto came from heavily massaged cylinder heads. The following morning, we found Billy Bruce hovering around the Monza convertible below, which he had just sold. The buyer wouldn't have a lot of work to do on this one! |
I thought this Ohio Monza looked familiar, and realized I had photographed the same car at the Detroit Area Corvair Club Corvair Homecoming in August, 1998. The '65 obviously gets around! It's nicely equipped with a set of aftermarket genuine wires wheels and an chin spoiler. |
