Corvair Atlanta's Springfest '99

The general quality of the cars and trucks at Springfest was outstanding. Check out this handsome 1964 Silver Blue Monza convertible, proudly driven by James Law of Albany, Georgia. The car features a set of Kelsey-Hayes genuine wire wheels, offered in '64 as a pricey but classy alternative to simulated wire wheel covers! The Kelsey-Hayes wheels were discontinued as an option for the 1965 model year, the year Chevrolet converted the Corvair from a 4-stud to a 5-stud pattern.

Here's another view of Ken Arnold's '63 Rampside, mentioned earlier. Ken didn't enter the Concours competition, chosing instead to relax and hang out with other Springfest visitors. The mid-engine truck still   got more than its share of attention!

Ken's done a little more detail work on his Rampside since we originally featured it (See the X-tra! section). He's added some aluminum diamond plate over the TH-350 transmission and completed some work on the interior, including a console mounted Corvette floor shifter and a restored instrument panel.

After the event, Ken took me for a brief tour of Helen and a couple of side roads. The Rampside's ride was incredibly smooth. Handling was superb, acceleration was brisk and braking, outstanding. Of course, you might expect that with 4-wheel disk brakes and Corvette independent rear suspension!

Where does the radiator get its air? A scoop under the front bumper ducts it through an electric fan mounted just ahead of the rad.
