Jim Bryant's Cool Cajun Corvair

The more closely Jim looked at his new purchase, the more excited he got about its condition. It was obvious he'd achieved his objective of finding a car that wouldn't require a lot of work!

Even the instrument cluster in the Monza car is pristine, as can be seen in the view of the speedometer at right. Add 100,000 miles to the odometer current reading and you realize this little Corvair has seen enough road to circle the globe 4 times! It was pure coincidence that Jim took possession of the car just a few miles after the odometer had rolled over, which should make it easy for him to track his personal mileage.

At right, we see the air-conditioning condenser perched over the engine, as it was configured for the 1965 model car. 1966 to '69 Corvair design changes mounted the condenser in the fresh air plenum behind the rear window. Jim prefers the later arrangement and will be retrofitting his car with the '66-69 hardware, which makes it much easier to access the carburetors and fan belt assembly during servicing.

When the factory installed air-conditioning, it also relocated the spare tire from the engine compartment to the trunk. In the photo we can also see the blower assembly unique to the air-conditioned cars. In the upper center of the shot, an original "Opti-kleen" windshield washer fluid bottle sits in its bracket beside the washer reservoir. To its right, we see the braking system's single master cylinder, which can easily be changed out for the dual master cylinder used in subsequent model years.
