Ron & Doris Blachut's 1966 Corsa

Ron was pleased to receive from the seller, the original Owner Protection Plan, the "PROTECT-O-PLATE," and the dealer stamp indicating the car had originally been delivered to a Chevrolet dealership in Oyster Bay, New York, on June 14, 1966. He also has all the original books that came with the car: Convertible, Accessories and Owner's Guide, as well a vintage ad featuring a duplicate of his Tropic Turquoise Corsa.

Youth movement (text from ad at right)

You can be a senior citizen, a person who's perennially 39 or a teenager. As long as you're the kind who gets a wallop out of fresh experiences, you've got all the makings of a Corvair enthusiast. For instance, you'll find the steering light and easy (no engine weight up front). You'll find you track cleanly and surely even through mud and snow (that's your rear-engine traction at work). And you'll find the ride solid and the cornering flat (that's where the four-wheel independent suspension comes in). Does your car strike you as being a little stodgy these days? Maybe while it's been getting older you've been getting younger. Try a Corvair at your dealer's and see.

CORVAIR—Unusual the Chevrolet way

The fine print at the lower right of the lady's picture reads: The Corvair Corsa convertible's outside rearview mirror is one of the eight new standard safety aids. Always check it before passing.

In the short time the Blachuts have owned the car, Ron has attended to some detailing. He repainted the rust-free trunk interior because its color was not correct for the year.

He plans to restore the front suspension and brakes, and to install a dual master cylinder (which became a standard feature on Corvair in the 1967 model year). He located an original AM/FM radio and speaker and sent them out to Vintage Radio Restorations for restoration and re-chroming.

Further restoration work will involve the replacement of the foam in the front seats, which he says was overlooked when the seats were recovered. After 35 years of use, the foam is "played out."

The 140 hp/4-speed Corsa runs great, although Ron experienced fuel pump failure not long after buying. He replaced the original mechanical pump with a new electric fuel pump from Larry Claypool, a leading Corvair specialist from Vairshop.com. While he was at it, Ron added a Pertronix Ignitor II ignition module, Pertronix FlameThrower II coil, a new distributor, and blue silicone wires. He rebuilt the carburetors and linkage and installed larger main jets all-around. He describes the improved setup as "QUICK!"
