Dave Binnie's Blow-through Turbo
Dave works for Evercoat, a company that manufactures Polyester and epoxy products used by the automotive body repair industry. Several times a year, he travels to visit his company's clients and in this capacity, he's met and gotten to know some of the best antique car restorers in Canada. He's picked up a tip here and a trick there, and honed his body working and painting skills to the point where he now does all his own work. In his spare time, Dave often works on other people's Corvairs. It not only gives him a chance to learn more about the cars he loves, it also allows him to fund his own Corvair escapades without impacting the family budget. That's what we all need; a self-supporting Corvair habit! |
Above, a shot taken from the box of Dave's trusty half ton, which proudly reflects in the rear quarter panel of the super straight sport coupe. It's easy to imagine the hours Dave put into this car; all the parts chasing, paint stripping, block sanding, painting, wet sanding and polishing. Add to that the time spent changing out all the weather stripping, installing the Corsa instrument cluster, refurbishing the suspension, swapping transaxles and building the turbo engine, and you conclude he's been a busy guy. I think you'll agree, he's done a superior job. The car stands out from the pack as one with unique personality; one that refuses to be embarrassed by any Corvair-loathing "Ralph said" type; one that exudes a sense of mastery and moxie. |
After posting the picture above, I centered it in my browser and stared at it for several minutes, clutching my coffee cup and drooling slightly out of the corner of my mouth. Wow, what a bitchin' Corvair! What's Dave up to now? Next on the agenda is the replacement of the water injection system, as it's already been decided this car must have an intercooler. He'll add an air-to-water unit soon, and he's also started on another project car, an early model Spyder coupe. You can bet it won't be normally aspirated! Thinking about a turbo project?
