Jay Eitel's V-12 'Jaguair' Corvair

In the photo at right, the battery is in the standard Corvair location.

The aluminum disc and bracket was fabricated for the spare tire.

The black piece is a relay block for the dual, rear mounted, electric Buick fans that cool the lower radiator. The ECM turns the fans on and off when needed.

In the picture below, a full view of what formerly was the Corvair's engine compartment, now occupied by a whole new array of components.

Battery and spare tire location

To cool the water-pumping V-12, the primary radiator and a coolant recovery tank are mounted directly behind the Corvair's standard engine air plenum. Air flow through the radiator is provided by a Corvair fan mounted in the rounded aluminum housing resembling a Porsche cooling fan, driven by the belt seen in the picture. Even at idle, the belt is driven by engine power transmitted from the torque converter through a shaft that comes through the trans-axle. The previously mentioned lower radiator and fans augment cooling.

Reconfigured original engine compartment

A custom fabricated gas tank is seen in the upper right area of the photo. The larger of the two fixtures on top of the tank is the sending unit for the gas gauge. The visible tank is linked to two others, one under the one we see, and another in the area ahead of the upper radiator. In combination, the three gas tanks provide a total capacity of 30 gallons.

I asked Jay if he had managed to make the Jaguair sound like a Corvair.

"You can't hear the V-12," he explained. "It's quiet and it's in the trunk, and the lid has a rubber seal all around. There are no cooling air intakes in the front of the car. The air intake for the radiator is the stock Corvair plenum behind the rear window. The starter is in the back, so when you start it, the sound comes from the back. Once the car is running, the sound of the Corvair fan also comes from the back. The mufflers are quiet, so it sounds like a Corvair."
