Daytona 2000 - Corvair Speedweek

Below, Ken Arnold's 1963 Rampside. This remarkable vehicle, which Ken painstakingly restored and modified, features a mid-mounted V-8 and a Corvette independent rear suspension and all around disk brakes.

Having had the pleasure of a ride in the Rampside during the Corvair Atlanta's Springfest '99 in Helen, Georgia, and seeing first hand the quality of Ken's work, I was delighted when it was announced at the banquet that the Xtreme Rampside had won gold in the Concours d' Elegance!

A comprehensive feature showcasing the construction of this vehicle can be found in the Extra! section of this site. It you haven't visited it previously, I highly recommend it.

Sometimes when you reflect on life, you realize that in spite of whatever problems come your way, good or fun things happen that you couldn't predict, even a short time before they happened. For me, helping with Corvair tech inspection at Daytona International was one of those good things. The next time I watch the Daytona 500 on television, I'm sure the memory of my visit to Daytona 2000 and the International Speedway will make me smile, and in years to come, I'll probably even brag to the grandkids about it. But no matter how good that story might be, there are better stories to be told by the CORSA members who actually drove their Corvairs at Daytona. That's definitely one for the grandkids!

Special thanks to the Daytona 2000 Corvair Speedweek Convention Co-Chairs, Sarah Jones and Ed Lindsay. You did a terrific job. See you in Chicago!

Thank you to all members of Virtual Vairs and Fastvair who helped research this feature. Your assistance was very helpful and was much appreciated!

A note to all the Corvair owners who attended Daytona and didn't see their cars on these pages: One guy with one camera has to work pretty hard to get 'em all, and I missed some great ones. I'll try harder next year!
