Daytona 2000 - Corvair Speedweek

Richard Weidner of Whitehall, Pennsylvania, owns and drives only Corvairs. He drove to the convention in his daily driver, the 1964 Rampside seen below. With 172,000 miles on the chassis, the little truck is still going strong. It's equipped with a 95 hp engine and a Powerglide. The rear axle ratio is 3.27:1. Other features include a cruise control, push button dimmer, a spare tire mounted under the front of the cab behind the spoiler, and front and rear sway bars.

To keep the engine cool under a variety of operating conditions, Richard uses 2 folded fin oil coolers mounted back to back in the stock location, and a custom arrangement where the sides of the lower shrouds are slit open and hinged to help control heat. Closing them in cold weather takes only a few seconds.
