2001: A Corvair Odyssey

According to an article written by Pete Koehler in the September, 2001, edition of CORSA Communique, "Mark takes this unit out to the Silver Lake dunes and just lurks on the sidelines until the local hero hot shoes are identified. Then he goes out and soundly trounces them with his highly modified Corvair power."

Koehler's article also mentions Mark's next project—a purpose-built Corvair sand dragster—in which he hopes to set the national record with a Corvair power-plant. One look at the engineering he's put into Canyon Man tells you he has the talent to pull it off!

The '65 Monza convertible seen below is owned by Jim Stolt of Sandwich, Illinois, and runs 12:21 elapsed times in the quarter-mile at "about 105 mph." The wild Corvair custom is equipped with a front-mounted small-block Chevy V-8 mated to a Powerglide transmission with B&M shifter, and a narrowed 10-bolt live axle at the rear. As if all that isn't enough, Jim's ride has an NOS (nitrous oxide) bottle under the rear deck lid to provide a little extra combustion oomph when needed!
